Algo de especial debían tener los genes de la familia de Ruffin, porque se vio rodeado de cantantes que alcanzarían el éxito gracias a su talento natural: su hermano David y su primo Melvin Franklin formaron parte de The Temptations, mientras otro primo, Billy Stewart también alcanzaría las mieles del triunfo.

En cualquier caso, como hijo de un ministro evangélico, él empezó su carrera dedicándose al gospel, hasta que ese aprendizaje le llevaría a su determinación de dedicarse profesionalmente a la interpretación, fichando en 1961 por Motown donde, tras un paréntesis para realizar el Servicio Militar, rechazaría la oferta de incorporarse a The Temptations, recomendando para el puesto a su hermano menor David.

Tras unos primeros sencillos sin éxito —"Since I've lost you" de Norman Whitfield y Barrett Strong, y "How can I say I'm sorry", ambos producidos por Whitfield—, consigue alcanzar en 1966 el que sería el cénit de su carrera con la extraordinaria "What becomes of the brokenhearted?" —#6 R&B #7 Pop—, emotiva interpretación de un tema compuesto por Paul Riser, James Dean y William Weatherspoon y producido por William Mickey Stevenson y Weatherspoon, en el que su voz se entremezcla con las de The Originals, el grupo que haría los coros.

Después de una grabación como ésa, difícilmente iba a poder mantener el nivel y, paulatinamente, va iniciando un continuado declive, a pesar del interés de alguno de sus posteriores lanzamientos —"I've passed this way before", "Gonna give her all the love I've got", "Don't you miss me a little bit baby", "I'll say forever my love" o su versión del tema de Marv Johnson "You've got what it takes "—.

En 1970 grabaría I am my brother's keeper un celebrado por la crítica, pero no avalado por el público, álbum a dúo con su hermano, en el que destacarían sendas versiones —"Stand by me" de Ben E. King y "Turn back the hands of time" de Tyrone Davis—. A partir de ahí, algunas pinceladas sueltas —"Tell me what you want" en Chess #42 R&B en 1974, "Hold on to my love" en RSO #29 R&B en 1980, escrita y producida por Robin Gibb de Bee Gees y la que sería su última entrada en listas, un dúo junto a Maxine Nightingale —" Turn to me" en Highrise #17 R&B en 1982—.
