La que sería años más tarde conocida como "The Soul Queen of New Orleans" fue descubierta en 1958 por Tommy Ridgley. Sus primeros discos fueron bastante populares localmente, pero su primer éxito a nivel nacional no llegaría hasta 1960, cuando la semiautobiográfica "(You can have my husband but please) Don't mess with my man" editada por Ron alcanzaría el #22 R&B. El año siguiente se volvería a encontrar con el compositor y productor Allen Toussaint, con el que ya había trabajado anteriormente, y publicaría varios sencillos fantásticos para el sello Minit que, sin embargo, no obtendrían resultados más que a nivel local —"Look up (Whenever)", "I done got over it", "It's raining", "Somebody told you" y, especialmente, "Ruler of my heart" del que Otis Redding obtendría la inspiración para realizar su particular versión, retitulada como "Pain in my heart"—.

Tras su fichaje por Imperial alcanzaría su mejor resultado en listas llegando al #17 Pop con "Wish someone would care" acompañado en la cara B por el eufórico "Break-a-way". Su continuación —"Anyone who knows what love is (Will understand)"— vuelve a alcanzar las listas de éxitos, pero se convertiría en un sencillo más recordado por su cara B, al contener la versión original de una canción versionada ese mismo año por The Rolling Stones —"Time is on my side"—, y que, debido a ello, Thomas generó aversión a interpretar esta canción en sus espectáculos en directo, y sólo lo hacía ante el requerimiento continuado de los asistentes. Sus dos siguientes lanzamientos con Minit volvieron a alcanzar las listas de ventas —"Times have changed", "He's my guy"—, pero su estrella perdía fuerza y no repetiría éxito a pesar de interpretar material de alto voltaje —"Some things you never get used to", "Take a look" o la relectura del clásico de James Brown "It's a man's-woman's world"—.

Su último éxito se debió a su magnífica interpretación en "Good to me", grabado en los estudios FAME y editado por Chess, y a partir de ahí inició un periplo en el que pasó por diferentes sellos, como Canyon, Cotillion —donde contó con la producción de Wardell Quezerque en un espléndido "Full time woman"— y Roker —dirigida por Jerry "Swamp Dogg" Williams, jr en "These four walls"—. Esta última colaboración le llevó a publicar un trabajo en 1973 para la etiqueta Fungus de corta vida, propiedad de Dogg. A partir de entonces ha continuado facturando álbumes para Rounder de alta calidad pero prácticamente nula repercusión, a la par que manteniendo una afamada reputación por sus interpretaciones en directo.
