The Traditional Music Archive from Gijón is arranging a release about Berto “Turulla” that will also deepen into the asturian musical scene of the 70s . A book will be published next April 2010 , together with a DVD which includes a documentary directed by Roberto Berciano (Berto's brother) containing photographic material and interviews to key asturian musicians of the 70s. It also comes with a CD including some of Berto's most representative recordings, as well as a 30 minutes rehearsal recording from La Turulla . This definitely means great news for the rediscovery of Spanish progressive rock.
Senogul is currently recording a suite in honor to Berto which is based on that musical material and will be used as a musical background for the DVD's picture gallery and hemerography .
A few remarks about Berto “Turulla” :
His real name was Alberto Berciano . He was a keyboard player from Gijón who had a short but very active career in Asturias during the end of the 70s and beginning of the 80s. Sadly, he died electrocuted in 1983 while checking a connection during one of his concerts, this being the main reason why new generations of musicians may know him.
His musical legacy is not well known although he was one of the pioneers of symphonic rock in Asturias. In fact, he was one of the first musicians to play a Minimoog in the region. He played in La Turulla (that is where his nickname comes from), an instrumental band influenced by Yes , Return To Forever and Música Urbana . The band was active just over 1977-1978 and disbanded without any official release.
He collaborated in several recordings with asturian singer-songwriters as a keyboard player and arranger, adding a prog touch to their music (such is the case of Carlos Rubiera's first albums and Xulio Ramos'). Cuélebre was his last band and the one that make him renowned in Asturias. They played melodic pop-rock mixed with asturian folk and symphonic elements. They released three LPs (featuring Berto in the first two of them) and an EP, as well as several singles ( Made in Asturies, Felices fiestas, Ave Fénix and Cuélebre ). None of that material has ever been released on CD. It is interesting to note that Ave Fénix includes a Spanish version of Games people play from Alan Parsons Project (entitled here Los juegos de la gente ).
A few days after Berto's death, a concert was held in his honor in “El Molinón” (Sporting de Gijón football stadium), this being the first time that a musical event was held in such venue. There were many musicians involved and Miguel Ríos and Victor Manuel were the main guests. The concert is still recalled by those who where there. |
