The shire of the Palencian Mountains has been a witness since long time ago of all kind of historical events. From the first prehistoric settlements, and then with the Iberian peoples till the roman conquest of these lands, in the I century BC. After the fall of Rome in the beginning of the V century, the visigoths invaded these lands giving them their name (Gothic Fields), which were depopulated after the muslim invasions in the VIII century. Finally, the Spanish Christian conquest ("La Reconquista") started the invasion of the primitive Castile from the North through these lands, and the best evidence of this are the many defensive towers and walls along all this shire, and the romanesque art represented in paintings and small churches in this part of Spain, whose abundance here has no comparison in all Europe.
The surroundings of La Galana are full of nature landscapes, romanesque monuments and roman and prehistoric ruins. In fact, in the same village where La Galana is placed you can see the Roman Bridge of Nestar, and its visitor´s centre. With more than 2.000 years of antiquity, this bridge of five eyes, unique in their gender in the community of Castila and León, it crosses the river Rubagon, uniting a Roman roadway between Pisoraca (Herrera of Pisuerga, Palencia) and Portus Blendium (Suances, Cantabria), even possible of traveling.
It´s worthwhile to visit and admire all the Palencian Mountains, and also the small town of Aguilar de Campoo , declared Historic and Artistic Place in 1966. The most remarkable monuments are the castle, dominating all the site, the arcaded square of the town hall, and the Monastery of Santa Maria la Real, where you can visit the Museum of the Romanesque.
