WHO ARE WE?
Our roots (2001-2006)
Vuelta Abajo was conceived on September 2001, when eight friends sharing a common taste in the Son and Boleros music, decide to form a group of traditional Cuban music after their travels thru Miami and Cuba. The name of Vuelta Abajo was chosen making reference to the popular tobacco crop area located in the northeast region of Cuba, where the excellence in the quality of the tobacco leaf make the area famous.
Shortly after the group begins to practice, appearances were made in various local night clubs and bars in Asturias, interpreting the traditional Son and Boleros repertoire. During that first phase (2001-2006), the group enjoyed at least thirty concerts and recorded their first CD entitled “CUBA”.
From the bottom of our hearts, we want to express our appreciation to all of those who have given us their unconditional support, and who have made this eager project named “Vuelta Abajo” possible. Special thanks go to Javi and Pio (La Bodeguita del Medio in Gijon, Asturias), and to Dani and Ruth (Eclipse Studios in Oviedo, Asturias).
And we cannot forget all of those who were the initial founders of this group and who are no longer part of this group. We owe alot to them...Nacho García, Sergio Garcia, Jorge Castro, Manuel García and Anton Fernandez. To them, our sincerest thanks.
Present (2006 - 2009)
During the month of January 2006, we revamped the group and increased the number of its members.
Presently, the group consists of 42 members. Adding new members, gave us the flexibility and priviledge to expand our repertoire and include folklore music from South America.
2006, 2007 and 2008 has been a period of hard and arduous work, both in practice and rehearsals, and in the intergration of the new members, finally being able to establish a common status-quo.
In January 2008, we began recording our second CD which includes a medly of different rhythms and sounds from the Americas. After a year of arduous hard work at the recording studios, our second CD titled "Luz de amanecer" was launched on March 6, 2009, at the “Club de Campo del Centro Asturiano” in Oviedo. This CD is dedicated to the memory of Luis Cueva, a dearest friend and member of the group who recently passed away.
In January 2012 we will celebrate our tenth anniversary, with the live recording of our third album. The appointment will be January 15th at 6 pm at Oviedo`s Philharmonic Theatre.
